Listen- Your Essential Oils Aren't A Cure All

I'm a big fan of essential oils and the wellness benefits they can bring to our lives.

But we need to have a talk y'all. Your essential oils are not a cure all.

I can't tell you how many times I've talked about mental health issues, or been at work and someone tells me their story and a response I get is how essential oils helped someone's relative get rid of their mental health issues.

There are a lot of benefits to essential oils! Don't get me wrong! That's why you can see in the image above, just a GLIMPSE of my stash!

But we need to be honest and realistic about how we promote the use of these products, as aids to wellness.

"Research on the effectiveness of aromatherapy — the therapeutic use of essential oils extracted from plants — is limited.
However, some studies have shown that aromatherapy can have health benefits, including:
Relief from anxiety and depression, improved quality of life, particularly for people with chronic health conditions, and improved sleep" . - Mayo Clinic

When we do anything for our health the important thing is to take a holistic approach. I think this is what draws people into the allure of essential oils in the first place. They may feel unheard by our medical system, or they are looking for something to assist because they're at their last stitch effort. These aren't unreasonable reasons to search for alternative solutions, but it's important to remember that life is about balance.

Balance isn't just hoarding every oil possible from companies pushing a new blend every other month to get you to commit to their line... It's about finding things that are complimentary to your life that allow you to feel fulfilled and given support on top of the help of your medical doctors.

I LOVE MY ESSENTIAL OILS!

Don't get me wrong! But let me explain how I would incorporate them in a way that creates a holistic and healthy approach to mental well being, as opposed to assuming they are a CURE ALL!

1) They help you build routine:

Something that anyone with mental illness understands is the need for routine and stability. I like to use some of my favourite oils to help create routine by getting used to waking up with a certain scent and letting it help me start my day! If I struggle with fatigue or grogginess I reach for Liquid Sunshine or Energy from Saje, they are filled with bright notes of citrus, rosemary, and peppermint!

2) They can help you with sleep:

Sleep is one of the biggest factors for people struggling with mental health. If you have a horrible sleep routine, you're not doing yourself ANY favours. So helping yourself ease into sleep with a routine with less screen time, maybe melatonin, OR you can use lavender, vetiver, velarian. These are all oils that promote a deep sleep. This is a win for so many people! I've used Sleep Well, and Tranquility by Saje.

3) They can help with chronic pain:

If you struggle with chronic musculature pain, or migraines you can embrace oils. These are lifesavers for those who can no longer take medications, or are avoiding medications that are strongly addictive. Topical application of oils such as Majoram, Peppermint, Clove, and more can be helpful with sore muscles and tension. For myself, I use Peppermint Halo from Saje regularly.

Are these oils curing me of my pain? My mental health issues? No. But if I'm experiencing a frustrating OCD episode I know I can use my energy roller and take some meditative breathes to remove myself from those thoughts. Is it just the oil? No! It's learning to associate positive scent with redirecting my thoughts into a healthy mindset. Therefore, if I am in that place, I can quickly be redirected!

The power of scent is amazing! But it's not going to work on it's own. Learning to understand our minds, what we are hurting from, where we want to go is all apart of using essential oils.

Do you use oils? How do you incorporate them in your daily life?
